Career
Kiryu Coco joined hololive as part of its 4th generation. The generation debuted between late December 2019 and early January 2020, shortly after Cover brought its Hololive, Holostars and INoNaKa Music brands together under the name Hololive Production. Her first stream took place on December 28, 2019. Because she streamed in both Japanese and English, her channel quickly became a link between the agency's Japanese talents and its growing overseas audience. This happened in the months before hololive launched its English-language branch.
Her 3D debut stream was uploaded to YouTube on June 27, 2020. In December 2020, the 4th generation, including Coco, served as the opening act at "hololive 2nd fes. Beyond the Stage," a two-day pay-per-view concert. Her channel became one of the platform's top earners of Super Chats. In mid-2021 it was reported to be the second most Super Chatted channel in the world, and it was later described as the most Super Chatted channel on YouTube.
In 2021 hololive announced that Kiryu Coco would graduate, meaning the character would stop appearing on YouTube. Her activities ended on July 1, 2021, and her graduation stream set viewing records. After she left, the title of hololive's highest Super Chat earner went to another member.
Activities
Streaming style
Her streams included casual chatting, gaming, karaoke and collaborations with other hololive members. She hosted a regular morning talk show called "AsaCoco" (also styled "AsaCoco Live News"). She also ran "Reddit Meme Review," a series in which she explained English-language internet memes to Japanese viewers. In collaborations she often acted as an English tutor for other members, which included teaching them English slang and profanity. She also often appeared in group content with members such as Amane Kanata. She was a known fan of the Yakuza video game series.
Characteristics
Coco was outspoken and humorous and swore often. She liked to test the limits of what could be shown on stream and broke with the usual idol image, which often led her streams into unusual topics. Her teasing of other members was part of her appeal, but she also took a serious, mature tone when discussing important subjects. She was described as protective of her coworkers and as someone who pushed the company to try new kinds of content. Commentators have credited her with paving the way for English-focused VTubers and with helping to bring hololive to audiences outside Japan. Other popular hololive talents of the same period included Usada Pekora, Houshou Marine and Shirakami Fubuki. Her generation also included Hoshimachi Suisei's fellow hololive members of that era.
