Tsukino Mito

Tsukino Mito (Japanese: 月ノ美兎) is a Japanese VTuber affiliated with Nijisanji, the VTuber group run by ANYCOLOR Inc. She was one of Nijisanji's first-generation members and is often described as the face of the agency. She is known for her offbeat humor, her knowledge of subculture and her unusual stream content.

Career

Tsukino Mito passed the official audition for Nijisanji, which was then run by Ichikara Inc. She was one of the eight first-generation members announced in February 2018, along with Yuki Chihiro, Elu, Higuchi Kaede, Shizuka Rin, Shibuya Hajime, Suzuya Aki and Moira. She uploaded her first video on February 8, 2018, and streamed the same day with the other Virtual Livers on Mirrativ. At first she streamed through the Nijisanji app with a 2D model that showed only her face.

Within about a month of her debut her channel had grown quickly. On April 7, 2018, she showed a 3D model for the first time during a Niconico Live broadcast. On April 29, 2018, she appeared at Niconico Chokaigi 2018, which was the first time Nijisanji took part in an outside event. Her name made the top 20 of a 2018 ranking of internet buzzwords. Her early success is credited with helping make Nijisanji one of Japan's largest VTuber agencies, and it earned her the nickname "Nijisanji Queen." Sources also say her early breakout helped shift VTuber activity from 3D video uploads toward 2D live streaming.

In March 2021 she published "Tsukino-san no Note," described as the first essay book by a VTuber. In July 2021 she began performing with JuvveL, a new idol unit within Nijisanji. She reached one million YouTube subscribers on December 12, 2022, the fifth Nijisanji member to do so.

Streaming style

Her streams include casual talk, experience reports, game playthroughs, covers and original songs. She often plays low-quality "kusoge" games and has also streamed titles such as Outlast, Grand Theft Auto V, Until Dawn and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Her Animal Crossing streams became known for soap-opera-style storylines. Her April Fools' Day content is also well known: the 2019 stream featured a bizarre cosplaying figure, later called "Nazino Mito," who also appeared in a TV commercial for her. She has hosted the radio-style program "Mitoraji" with guests.

Characteristics

The character is a 16-year-old second-year high school student. She serves as class president, which is where the nickname "Iinchou" comes from, and she belongs to a film research club. She opens her streams with the greeting "Kiritsu! Ki wo tsuke!" (Stand! Attention!). Her official profile describes her as tsundere but serious at heart, someone who tries hard, sometimes overdoes it and worries afterward that she said too much. She has long black hair and dark blue eyes. Her debut stream made her seem like a neat, proper student, but viewers soon noticed her way with words and her deep knowledge of subculture. The gap between her appearance and her eccentric humor became a key part of her popularity. She has said that she liked VTubers before her debut and that the first VTuber she watched was Kizuna AI.
