Kaguya Luna

Kaguya Luna (Japanese: 輝夜月) is a Japanese virtual YouTuber managed by VIC Inc. She started her activities in December 2017 and was one of the earliest VTubers to gain wide attention. She is known for her high-energy, free-spirited personality and for her collaborations with Kizuna AI.

Career

Work on the Kaguya Luna character began between 2016 and early 2017, and the concept took inspiration from Kizuna AI. VIC Inc. handled her management, and the illustrator Mika Pikazo created the character design. Mika Pikazo became widely known through this design and later designed other virtual talents, including Hakos Baelz. Kaguya Luna joined YouTube on December 4, 2017, and her channel is called "Kaguya Luna Official".

Her debut drew a very strong response. In 2018, her videos averaged more than one million views each, and she drew attention from the media and from other VTubers. During this period, she was grouped with Kizuna AI, Siro, Mirai Akari and Nekomasu as the "VTuber Four Heavenly Kings". For a time, she was the second most-subscribed VTuber after Kizuna AI.

In July 2018, she began working with the music label Sacra Music. On August 31, 2018, she held a solo virtual reality concert in the virtual venue "Zepp VR". This was an early example of a new way for VTubers to earn money from their work. In November 2018, her agency created a subsidiary group called The Moon Studio to manage Kaguya Luna and another VTuber, Pinky Pop Hepburn. Mika Pikazo was also involved in founding the studio.

Her first and only studio album, "×××" (pronounced "Batsu Batsu Batsu"), came out on January 15, 2020. She has not posted any new activity on YouTube since August 29, 2020.

Streaming style

Kaguya Luna's content was in Japanese and mostly consisted of edited videos. These covered free talk, gaming and singing. Her videos had a fast pace and a comedic, energetic tone. Her best-known partnership with another VTuber was with Kizuna AI. A widely seen early video, in which she did impressions of several VTubers, led to a series of playful exchanges and collaborations between the two. Her channel was also active on the Chinese video platform bilibili.

Characteristics

Kaguya Luna's character is named after the Moon. Her persona is known for being lively and unpredictable, which helped her stand out among early VTubers. Commentators see her as an influence on early VTuber culture, on fan creations and on later business models in the industry. For a time, she was the subject of more fan art than any other VTuber. Her quick success is also credited with encouraging many other virtual talents to debut, both in Japan and abroad.
