Career

Hololive Production began in December 2019, when Cover Corporation brought its female Hololive agency, its male Holostars agency and the INoNaKa music label together under one brand. The 1st generation of Holostars began debuting in June 2019, and a 3rd generation followed in May 2020. Kageyama Shien belongs to this 3rd generation. His YouTube channel was created on 8 April 2020 and his X (Twitter) account on 10 April. He posted his first tweet on 27 April and held his debut stream on 30 April 2020. Shortly after his debut, his Twitter account was suspended because he had set his birth year to 2020. Fans turned the incident into a running joke that portrays him as a baby.

He debuted as one third of the trio TriNero, alongside Aragami Oga and Tsukishita Kaoru. After Tsukishita Kaoru retired, Shien and Oga continued as the duo "MaFia". In January 2021 he revealed a New Year's costume modelled by Klaeia and opened his channel membership. On 20 March 2021 he reached 100,000 subscribers, the third HOLOSTARS member to do so. He debuted his 3D model on 10 July 2021 and a 2D summer costume on 10 August of that year.

The official HOLOSTARS website now lists him with an "Affiliate" label. The Virtual YouTuber Wiki describes him in the past tense, and the HoloList database records a retirement date of 5 July 2026.

Activities

Streaming style

Shien's debut was followed by two chatting streams, and his first game stream was Mahjong Soul. His content is mainly free talk, gaming and singing. He has taken part in several group events. On 10 October 2020 he appeared at Waku Waku! VTuber Hiroba Online Vol. 2, where he joined the "Virtual Clerk" exhibition, the "Anibako" programme and the "Chatting Fes" exhibition. On 22 July 2021 he competed in the Fall Guys tournament VTuber Fall Guys Sports Day as part of the team "Crustacean LobStars" with Hanasaki Miyabi, Arurandeisu and Aragami Oga, and the team finished first.

In July 2022, Phantasy Star Online 2 announced a collaboration with hololive production. Starting on 24 August 2022, players could obtain stickers along with outfits, accessories and voices based on Shirakami Fubuki, Ninomae Ina'nis and Kageyama Shien. Shien has more than 5,000 hours logged in the game, and the campaign made him the first male VTuber to have his voice and accessories added to it. On 12 June 2024 he played in the Street Fighter 6 tournament "VTuber SF6 Rikka Cup" on the team "Tamashii no Ichigeki", which placed second overall.

Characteristics

His official backstory describes him as a mafia boss from the land of beastmen who came to the human world to search for his missing best friend. Shinove scouted him after his search stalled. He acts tougher than he really is but lacks the talent to be truly evil, and he is often described as goofy, naive and fun-loving. Tsukishita Kaoru said that Shien "misuses his handsome voice". Aragami Oga has remarked that, mafia boss or not, Shien cannot get anything done without his subordinates. His design has pale skin, yellow eyes, black hair with white sidelocks, and black jackal ears, tail and fangs. People often mistake him for a cat or a dog. He likes anmitsu and omurice, dislikes oysters, and his favourite animal is the black Shiba Inu. His mascot is a cat named "Nekoyama Shien", drawn by Aragami Oga. He also has two minions, "Koyama" and "Nakayama", and he often calls his fans his "subordinates".
