Virtual Obachan

Virtual Obachan (Japanese: バーチャルおばあちゃん) is an independent Japanese VTuber who debuted on YouTube in January 2018. She is often called "VB," short for "virtual baba." She is known for playing an elderly grandmother using a stock 3D model taken from the FaceRig software, and for comedy game commentary that leans on provocative remarks.

Career

Virtual Obachan's YouTube channel, Virtual Obaachannel, was created on 30 January 2018. This was during the first big wave of Japanese virtual YouTubers that followed Kizuna AI. She has always been independent and has never joined an agency. Japanese media report that the character is produced by a video creator known as Suada. This creator was previously active on Niconico and is said to have shifted focus to running the Virtual Obachan channel.

At the time, many new VTubers spent a lot on custom character models. Virtual Obachan instead used a sample model bundled with FaceRig without changes. Because of this, she was called "Sample Obaachan" (Sample Grandma) for a time after her debut. The low-budget, deliberately plain look became part of the character's identity.

The channel grew quickly. By February 2019 it was reported to rank 17th by subscribers among more than 6,000 VTubers. It was still being listed among the most-subscribed independent VTubers years later. The channel had uploaded more than 1,700 videos, and its official X account is @virtual_obachan.

Streaming style

Most of Virtual Obachan's content is game commentary and live streams. Early videos on Call of Duty: WWII became especially well known. In them, the character often talks as if drawing on her own wartime experience. Her history is often unreliable for comedy: she claims Japan had an independent air force during the Second World War and shouts wartime slogans while fighting German forces. She also reminisces about the Edo period and the Meiji-era opening of Japan, which breaks her stated age of eighties and is part of the running joke.

Later streams include long-running series such as a Minecraft server for the channel, called "VB New Town," and playthroughs of simulation games such as Dressmaker. The channel also posts short morning greeting videos titled "Good Morning Virtual Obaachan," numbered by date. Uploads are frequent: one database estimated a new video every two days or so.

Characteristics

The character is presented as a typical grandmother, sweet and caring toward her "grandchildren," meaning her viewers. The channel's description simply says that Virtual Obachan lives in the viewer's heart. Commentators describe her as a parody persona. She leans on role-play and comedy rather than the idol-style anime image common among VTubers. Japanese writers have noted that she breaks the assumption that a VTuber must look cute or cool. They also point out the gap between the gentle grandmother look and the edgy content, which includes jokes about old age and war and other provocative remarks. Some of these comments have drawn criticism and online backlash, but they have also produced many widely quoted lines from her videos.
