Career

Tokino Sora went to a high school specializing in music. She started working with Cover Corporation before the hololive concept existed. In 2017 the virtual YouTuber format was still new. Kizuna AI had been posting pre-recorded videos since late 2016, and Cover Corporation had shown virtual live streaming in a tech demo in March 2017, but the technology was not yet in wide use.

Sora held her first livestream on 7 September 2017 on Niconico. That stream is often remembered as having had about 13 viewers. She later moved her livestreams to YouTube. She debuted before hololive formally organized its talents into generations, so she is counted as part of the "0th generation" with Roboco, Sakura Miko, Hoshimachi Suisei and AZKi.

In 2019 she made her major-label debut with Victor Entertainment, with "Kotoba Kaze" as her debut song. That year she also joined the main cast of the TV Tokyo drama series Watanuki-san Chi no, and she appeared again in its second season. On 6 October 2019 she held her first solo live concert, "Dream!". In 2020 she was announced as one of the VTuber guest characters in the game Neptunia Virtual Stars. She reached one million YouTube subscribers in 2022.

Sora and AZKi perform together as the duo SorAZ. Their album Futurity Step came out on 20 December 2023, and they held a joint concert at Club Citta in January 2024. In July 2024 she sang "Okaerinasai" (Welcome Back), the opening theme for the anime adaptation of My Wife Has No Emotion. On 7 September 2026 she received a redesigned visual, the first step in a plan to update the designs of all hololive members.

Activities

Streaming style

Her streams include gaming, chatting and karaoke. She is known for liking horror games. She is prone to 3D motion sickness, so she finds it hard to play first-person or fast-moving games for long. Singing is central to her work, and her "I tried to sing" cover series includes songs originally voiced with VOCALOID. In December 2018 she took part in Tubeout!, an AR event held at Tower Records Shibuya with other VTubers.

Music and works

  • "Kotoba Kaze": major debut song (2019)
  • Futurity Step: album as SorAZ with AZKi (2023)
  • "Okaerinasai": opening theme of the anime My Wife Has No Emotion (2024)

Characteristics

Sora is often described as easygoing, cheerful and comforting. Fans call her "Tokino Sora Mama" because of her motherly attitude. Commentators describe her as an example of the traditional "seiso" (pure, proper) idol image among VTubers. As hololive's first member, she is often credited with paving the way for the talents who followed. Her stated hobbies include drawing, singing, playing the piano, sweets and cats. One of her long-held goals is to perform at Yokohama Arena. Her current design has long brown hair, blue eyes and two star-shaped hair clips, one of them with a red ribbon so that it looks like a shooting star.
