Career
Oozora Subaru debuted on YouTube in September 2018 as part of hololive's second generation. Her generation-mates were Murasaki Shion, Nakiri Ayame, Yuzuki Choco and Minato Aqua, who later left the group. In her debut she introduced herself as the manager of her school's mixed martial arts club and e-sports club. Like many early hololive members, she grew slowly at first. Her audience then expanded a great deal during 2019 and 2020, as the agency as a whole grew quickly.
Early in her career, Subaru invited Maimoto Keisuke of Nijisanji to a collaboration stream. This stream has been described as a turning point that encouraged him to continue as a VTuber. It is also cited as an early step toward the friendly rivalry and regular collaborations between hololive and Nijisanji talents.
On 4 April 2019, she appeared as "Subaru Duck" in hololive's collaboration with the game Dawn of the Breakers. Her regular character model appeared later that year. She also took part in brand collaborations, including Curry Week Live with Minato Aqua and Usada Pekora. In October 2022, the amusement park Fuji-Q Highland announced "hololive in Fuji-Q Highland ~SNOW*WORLD~", which featured her alongside Shirakami Fubuki, Nakiri Ayame and Ookami Mio. The event ran from 19 November to 30 December 2022. Kotobukiya has also released a scale figure of her in her signature outfit.
Activities
Streaming style
Subaru's streams cover video games, karaoke and chatting with viewers, and she often appears in hololive's special events and group collaborations. She plays Minecraft regularly. On the hololive server she runs her own in-character building company, Oozora Kensetsu. Her ASMR streams became known for her impressions of Donald Duck, which helped give her the nickname "Duck". She is a fan of sports and professional wrestling. She invented a move called the "Oozora Subaru style neck and back breaker", which professional wrestler Great-O-Khan later used in real matches.
She often works in pairs and small groups. These include "AyaSuba" with Nakiri Ayame, "NEGI☆U" with Minato Aqua and Momosuzu Nene, and "SubaMoon" with Moona Hoshinova of hololive Indonesia. Fans call her, her designer Shigure Ui and Maimoto Keisuke the "Oozora Family" (Oozora-ke).
Characteristics
Subaru is presented as an outgoing, cheerful and lively girl who can talk to anyone. In group settings she usually plays the tsukkomi, or straight man, who points out the absurd things other members say or do. This often makes her the target of jokes. When excited or pleased she says "shuba shuba shuba", which has become one of her best-known catchphrases. She gave Cover Corporation CEO Motoaki Tanigo the nickname "YAGOO" after misreading his name, and the name spread widely in the VTuber community. Her character was designed by illustrator and VTuber Shigure Ui.
