Career

Nekomata debuted with the Hololive Gamers group of hololive on April 6, 2019. She was the group's third member, after Shirakami Fubuki and Ookami Mio, who had both encouraged her to interview with the company. She received a job offer on the same day she interviewed with Motoaki Tanigo, the president of what was then a small company. After joining, she recommended a friend to the company, and Inugami Korone debuted in Hololive Gamers shortly afterward. The two are close friends and are known together as "OkaKoro". She is also close to Oozora Subaru of hololive's 2nd generation, who credits Nekomata with showing her how to enjoy video games.

In July 2019, Nekomata began casual conversation collaborations with Nijisanji-affiliated VTuber Shiina Yuika, whose character was also illustrated by Kamioka Chiroru. Frequent collaborations between Nijisanji and Hololive talents are rare, so their regular streams together drew attention. Nekomata reached one million YouTube subscribers on April 17, 2021. According to the analytics site Streams Charts, her average viewership of 10,500 in 2023 was the tenth-highest among VTubers. In October 2024, she spoke at a Meta Quest event for the video game Triangle Strategy.

Activities

Streaming style

Nekomata is known for her ASMR streams. Before 2021 she streamed ASMR irregularly, about once every few months, and after 2021 she did so much more often. Her voice is lower and softer than those of other Hololive members who do ASMR. She appears in several of Hololive's voice packs, and as of 2024 she was streaming situational ASMR in YouTube members-only streams. Her channel also includes gaming and chat streams.

In February 2024, three of her songs were permanently added to the rhythm game Sound Vortex Exceed Gear. She was also part of the Hololive music group Blue Journey, and she has performed at concerts and released original songs with Hololive Gamers.

Characteristics

Nekomata's cat-themed character has purple hair. Her birthday, February 22, is National Cat Day in Japan. Around her debut, she had a tomboyish image because of her bob cut and her use of "boku", a first-person pronoun traditionally associated with men. Over time, she became known for being open about sexual topics and for her use of double entendres. In an interview, she said she has liked Vocaloid songs and the singer Ringo Sheena since she was young.
