Career

Matsukai Mao debuted with NIJISANJI as part of a three-member group with Emma★August and Luis Cammy. The trio is known as Aka no Soshiki, or "The Red Organization." Her YouTube debut took place on November 3, 2019. From then on she streamed regularly on her channel, which describes her as a NIJISANJI member and a self-styled genius.

On September 15, 2021, NIJISANJI announced a 3D unveiling stream for Mao. The stream aired on September 22, 2021, giving her a full 3D model alongside her Live2D model. Over the years she has also received several additional official outfits, including a maid/military-style costume, a jiangshi costume, and a "spicy girl" outfit.

Mao also releases music through the TuneCore Japan distribution service. Her artist page there lists her under NIJISANJI, with genres including anime/game music, rock, J-pop, pop and alternative. She stays active within NIJISANJI and takes part in agency-wide events, for example practice streams for the company's 2026 Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament.

Her members-only perks include a monthly stream for channel members, member-only community posts, and custom badges and emotes.

Characteristics

In her character's backstory, Mao is a familiar who is supposed to deceive people for her master. However, she is so clumsy and hapless (ponkotsu, in Japanese slang) that she is rarely much help. She is said to have made a pact with Yuuki Chihiro to serve as Chihiro's servant. Mao is described as a demon in a woman's body: she has no gender, but uses she/her pronouns. Her official profile lists her age as 15.

Her character design has dark skin, grey hair, purple eyes and visible fangs. Her image color is listed as #C93965. She calls herself a genius, but viewers and wiki sources describe her as naive and silly in a way that adds to her charm. She is also known for her skill at making animations.
