Sachiko Iwate

Sachiko Iwate (Japanese: 岩手さちこ) is a Japanese virtual YouTuber who serves as the official VTuber of Iwate Prefecture. She is known for promoting the prefecture's tourism, food, culture and relocation information through YouTube, X and Instagram.

Career

Iwate Prefecture launched Sachiko Iwate as part of an effort to use a virtual YouTuber to promote the region. She debuted on February 14, 2020, when her official X (then Twitter) and Instagram accounts began operating, and prefectural public relations announced the project the same day. The character was created to reach young people who get their information mainly from social media such as YouTube and X. Her stated aim is to raise interest in Iwate, mainly among people from their late teens to their thirties, to build a wider fan base for the prefecture and to encourage people from outside the region to get involved with it.

Before her video debut she shared her preparations on social media. Video releases on her official YouTube channel began in mid-March 2020. The prefecture's regional promotion office, which runs the "Iwate Marugoto Urikomi-tai" campaign, oversees the project. In the campaign's setting, Sachiko applied to become one of its publicity members because she wanted more people to know about Iwate.

Streaming style

Most of her content consists of short promotional videos rather than long live streams. Each video introduces a local attraction, a prefectural initiative or information for people thinking about moving to Iwate. One numbered episode shows her touring the northern Sanriku coast along the Michinoku Coastal Trail, with stops at sites such as Marine Rose Park Noda Tamagawa and Kitayamazaki. Regional tourism sites have also shared her videos. On X she posts about seasonal events in the prefecture, such as fireworks festivals and the Morioka Tanabata festival, and she usually greets followers with "Konsachi".

Characteristics

The character is described as cheerful, serious and very curious. She is a local Iwate girl who has practised martial arts since childhood. In her backstory she belonged to the naginata club in high school and competed at national high school and national sports competitions. Her hair is the same nando (grayish blue) color as the Iwate prefectural flag. Her outfit is based on a traditional martial arts training uniform and includes Iwate's traditional crafts.
