MrMarmot (Japanese: マーモットさん; Chinese: 一隻土撥鼠) is an independent Chinese-language YouTuber and animal VTuber. He uses a marmot avatar in his videos and livestreams. He is best known for satirical animated videos about social and political issues in China, including The Life of a Little Pink and When China Liberated the World... Cyber Dissident 2077.

Career

MrMarmot has run his Chinese-language YouTube channel, 一隻土撥鼠MrMarmot, since 2022. His official X account dates from April 2022. According to the channel description, he mainly talks about personal experiences. He also covers gender relations, politics, games and trending news from time to time. He appears as an animal-themed VTuber, using a cartoon marmot avatar in both his edited videos and his livestreams.

The channel became widely known in late 2023. That year, the Taiwanese animated video The Life of a Mountain Road Monkey went viral and inspired many tributes and parodies. MrMarmot's contribution was The Life of a Little Pink, uploaded on October 28, 2023. It satirizes young Chinese online nationalists known as "Little Pinks" and drew wide attention. On November 10, 2023, he followed it with When China Liberated the World... Cyber Dissident 2077. Taiwanese media reported that this video passed about 350,000 views within two days of its release. In the video description, MrMarmot said he had let himself go with this one and that its script was rather surreal.

The Life of a Little Pink (小粉紅的一生, October 28, 2023): A young nationalist ignores problems at home such as unemployment and collusion between government and business. He blames foreign countries for his troubles. After losing his job, he joins a protest over unpaid factory wages and is suppressed by the police. When he exposes a corrupt company, he is harassed online and banned from platforms. The video ends with a quotation from the United States Declaration of Independence.
When China Liberated the World... Cyber Dissident 2077 (當中國解放了全世界⋯⋯賽博反賊2077, November 10, 2023): An animated video inspired by Cyberpunk 2077. It imagines a world in 2077 under Chinese Communist Party rule, with constant surveillance, a social credit system and strict control of speech. The protagonist is Wojak, who carries the number 8964, and his social credit score falls because his speech is monitored. Some scenes were drawn from real photographs of the Hong Kong protests. The video ends with a special police officer apologizing to the victims and a quotation from Lu Xun's Huagai Collection.
